Cask Details

This edition of the Octomore was released in 2018 and being the .1 version is considered the benchmark of the 10th release of Octomore. Distilled in 2013 and aged for 5 Years in Ex-American Oak Barrels this release has everything going for it as far as heavily peated whisky goes. At 107ppm and 59.8% ABV it certainly packs a punch. A lot of people obsess over the different numbers associated with Octomore and some bottles are highly sought after but incidentally none get a bad review at all which makes them all the nicer. Yes, you may need the palate to dive straight into an Octomore but once your senses recover there is something addictively special about them. This one for me is a great one to try as it is not as complex as others, it really has Octomore at the core and a fabulous dram to then base comparison of others on. The spirit involved in making this really shines through which helps really put the distillery on the map as one of the best, most Octomore bottles are relatively young bottles and most being in Virgin Oak Casks for, in this case, 5 years really shows how good a spirit they have used.

Nose

Arran_18YO-17JUL19_800x (1)_edited.jpg

The nose for me on this one is initially overpowering with the high ABV and heavily peated dram so takes a while for anything to come through but after some time letting it sit get a lot of butter and vanilla notes coming through the iodine smell of the peat. Intense smoke gives way to some herby smell with a little kick of all spice.

Taste

Vanilla is at the forefront of the taste when it hits the tongue and then lots of different spices, ginger, cinnamon and almost a curry type spice really come through. Extremely oily as you would expect with a dram of this nature almost the smell you get from a small garage picking your car up after it's MOT.

Finish

The finish is lengthy and tasty, those spices hit the back of the throat but if you let it sit in the mouth and slowly finish it there are lots of maple syrup and toffee notes in there with a hint of salty seaweed to finish with.
