Cask Details
This is a bottle I picked up after a tour of Lagavulin Distillery in April 2019. The kinship established following a visit to Islay makes drinking any bottle purchased whilst on holy land a special drinking experience.
Whilst Lagavulin typically comes at you with an intense peat smoke. The Distillers Edition is one of the most mellow, heavy hitting peated whiskies I have ever tried. The double maturation in the PX cask introduces a sweetness which cuts right through the intensity of the smoke, I imagine it’s like chewing grapes dried on a peat fire. The result is a complex, yet extremely smooth heavily peated whisky, making the Distillers Edition a truly wonderful dram.
The packing states a phrase long used to describe this intense malt whisky, noting “Time Takes Out the Fire But Leaves In The Warmth”, I believe this sums up the 2017 Distillers Edition perfectly.
Nose
After being introduced to the dram, i am getting a strong fresh mint cutting through a dried fruit, raisin smell. Once left to breathe and become accustomed to those profiles, a strong nutty aroma dominates the dram. Always find it fascinating whilst left, the character of a whisky can completely change from first nosing.
Taste
Initially i pick up on a spiciness, like cracked black pepper. This is complemented with a dark chocolate which, with the peat smoke, reminds me of a strong espresso. Still present is the dried fruit and nut which was strong on the nose, but has began to mellow out.
Finish
Most notably is the length of the finish. A good few minutes after sipping, the peat smoke ever so subtly lingers in the back of the mouth.
