Cask Details

Ailsa Bay is an interesting whisky and has been phrased as Whisky Hacked, and for all those techies out there it is one of the most heavily influenced whiskies ever developed by technology and science rather than good old fashioned distilling techniques. There will be many, many naysayers who will never drink a whisky developed by science and I think the industry is far from embracing these as core distilling techniques but is there actually a market for it and more importantly is it actually any good? Well, in my humble opinion, absolutely in both cases, at some point technology will be used by a distillery to help bring a better final product and if 1 distillery does it then there will be those that follow, will it always produce better whisky than that of a seasoned master distiller with all the best equipment and ingredients at hand, I would doubt it but for mass market and ensuring that mass marketed whiskies taste great it will be imperative to the future of scotch whisky that it happens.

This Ailsa Bay bottle proves that even in its infancy it will work as I was actually surprised with this bottle and strongly believe I may keep one on my shelf at all times. Initially having only even purchased the bottle to gain 2 glasses that were given away with the bottle, I thought I have it now why not try it and after the first dram I had to have a second as I couldn't believe how nice a dram I was having.

The bottle and packaging is great looking as well and been well thought out and being an Ayrshire bottling makes it a little more special being local. Bottled at 48.9% with No Age Statement and a retail price of £54.95 it is a great value bottle.

Nose

On the nose you initially get that smoky peated scent, given the bottle is called sweet smoke it should be no surprise but as a lowland whisky will surprise at just how smoky it is. Let the smell linger in the air a little and you will start to get some honey and citrus flavours in the air, the smoke not overpowering in anyway and makes me think of neighbours having a barbecue on a hot summers day.

Taste

That smoky taste really comes through and gives a sense of honey glazed ribs off the BBQ but once it goes to the back of the tongue the vanilla, honey and oak really shine through.

Finish

Really nice finish, not too long and goes down really nice like syrup and just enough to make it enjoyable and make you want another (And maybe another after that)
